Painting an oak bookcase

I got a lot of questions about how I painted the oak bookcase in the playroom so I thought I'd make a post about it.  The other playroom details can be found here.

This is how the bookcase started.  I think some of it was oak and some was laminate.

I started out by using deglosser on the whole piece.  It is really easy but be sure to wear gloves, eye protection and a mask.  Just read the instructions carefully

Then I used Valspar's contractor bonding primer.  I've used this primer on a ton of stuff this year and have been really happy with it.  I prime almost everything I paint.  Priming seems like a pain and not very gratifying when you just want to get your pretty paint on a project but I think it makes a huge difference and leads to a longer lasting, even finish.

I used Behr Interior Enamel paint in Satin.  The color is Refreshing pool.  When painting something that gets a lot of use then use ENAMEL paint instead of normal wall paint.  It's easier to clean up and seems more durable.  I applied all the paint with a brush and a mini foam roller.

Ta-da!  Love how the bookshelf turned out.  I didn't put anything on it for 2 or 3 weeks so the paint can cure and harden.  Even if the paint is dry to the touch it isn't always cured and can get dents, dings and scratches easier.

I painted this last June and this is a close up of one of the shelves.  The bookshelf has held up really well especially considering that I have 4 kids and the bookshelf is in the playroom.  I found 3 or 4 little dings in the finish which are probably from a sword swing or flying matchbox cars.

A little side view.

Hope that helps!  Now go paint something!
